Bloom Bears
Project on Crisis Part II- CLIMATLOG
Curated by Kate Bae in Collaboration w/ Adrian Dongmin - Eco Action Forest (GreenWave Co.)
In our world today, conflict and overwhelming anxiety stemming from inequality has caused division among generations and genders, threatening our lives and planet. This crisis we face demands time for reflection, a chance to contemplate the choices we make and the impact they have on our planet and each other. Eco Action Forest (Green Wave Co.) of Korea and Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA) of NYC are creating a dialogue around these issues using a planting pot made from discarded silage wrap from the rice field as a blank canvas. Invited artists were asked to translate resilience and strength through their art, using the form of this planting pot as the symbol of hope. Through this project, together, we are creating artwork that speaks to the deep divisions caused by inequality and how it threatens our very existence.
Crafted from recycled and upcycled fabrics settled into the planting pots, Bloom Bears embody the potential for change, renewal, and connection. Bear making has been a generational pursuit in my family, and the teddy bear for me represents a timeline, a sense of belonging, a connection with the past and present, and an opportunity to create something new. Bloom Bears represent great symbolism for me - not only PRIDE and self-expression, but also the urgent need for equality. As I crafted each bear, I couldn't help but think about the generations before and generations to come – working with materials old and new – considering their histories and potential futures. I wanted these bears to embody a sense of hope for their future showing that even discarded materials can be transformed into something beautiful and meaningful. Just as flowers bloom from seeds planted in fertile soil, these bears signify growth, transformation, and the potential for a brighter tomorrow – a future where equality prevails, where the climate crisis is addressed, where every individual's needs are met and all life is valued.
