It might be safe to say that Mother Nature sent us all to our rooms for a time out. Volume II: May 2020 asks the graduate students of the Pafa Seminar, Artist as Curator to respond to the myriad of feelings, images, and memories the experience of being grounded brings to light. When our younger selves experienced groundedness, we were forced to face what we had done to end up grounded in the first place, allowing us to enter a space of reflection and growth. How did we free ourselves? How can boundaries be transcended or embraced under a Stay At Home order? As the home becomes a stage, every action is a performance – buttering toast, a dramatic act of ritual – the gravity and poignancy of every moment we have and share becomes important, empathetic, and artful. How can we use this time to nurture ourselves, our familial relationships, even our community, from a place of rest? (EM)BODY is a zine organized by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts’ MFA Artist as Curator class led by instructor Alexis Granwell. This zine came to fruition as the product of restructuring the course’s syllabus due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. (EM)BODY offers a new format for the graduate students to curate, exhibit, and connect while in-person exhibitions are impossible due to quarantine. Participating Artists: Autumn Casey Neill Catangay Bernadette Colburn Patricia Connelly Victoria Davis Lily Furniss Ash Garner Sara Havekotte Naomi Momoh Morgan Osburn Bhoomi Patel Julia Rix Maura Roncace Claudia Valenti Tess Wei

Volume I: April 2020 presents drawings, collage, personal essays, interviews and digital content that embody resilience and offer glimpses into how creative processes evolve under quarantine. Intimate snapshots of the artists' experiences are shared as they adapt to the COVID-19 crisis, postpone their thesis exhibition, and search for alternative media and means of collaboration. Though physically isolated, the artists share their work in (EM)BODY as a way to connect console, and convene as a community in this shared experience of the pandemic.
