Livestock are defined as animals kept or raised for use or pleasure and are regarded as an asset meant to generate profit. They are also not permitted to control their own reproduction and have no choice in their way of life. Basically, no bodily autonomy.
Lately with my work, I have been feeling connected to the cow as a bridge to my childhood and as a way to talk about current events in my adult life. This piece is in response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. I thought - through making my inner concerns a physical artwork, I can find the clarity hon how to respond moving forward and reclaim my body from this government that has valued all bodies with a uterus as less than - voting that our bodies' function is more "valuable" than our own choices in a "free" country. Women, feminine people, non-binary people, queer people, anyone with a uterus, and all allies will NOT put up with being treated like livestock...
However, it is worth noting that if we are livestock in their eyes, a herd is powerful. There are more of us than there are of them. Together, we will fight.
This image was taken on July 4th, 2022 with an available source of photography - my iPhone X. For me, Independence Day has been revoked until further notice. We can not celebrate the country or our "freedom" until there is freedom for ALL women, BIPOC, LGBTIQAPD, and Indigenous people + an and all other people who are not treated as equal in this country.
While my freedom as a female body is in jeopardy, I will not be celebrating male freedom.
"The decision whether or not to bear a child is central to a woman's life, to her well-being and dignity. It is a decision she must make for herself. When the government controls that decision for her, she is being treated as less than a full adult human responsible for her own choices."
-Ruth Bader Ginsburg
